Jul 26, 2023

Applying for a visit visa (temporary resident visa) to Canada involves several steps. Below is a general outline of the application process as of my last update in September 2021. However, keep in mind that immigration policies and procedures can change, so it’s essential to verify the latest information from the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website or through the Canadian embassy/consulate in your country.

Determine your eligibility: Before applying, ensure that you are eligible for a visit visa to Canada. Temporary resident visas are typically issued for tourism, visiting family or friends, attending business events, or participating in short-term courses.

Gather required documents: Commonly required documents for a Canadian visit visa application include:

A valid passport (with at least six months validity beyond your planned date of entry to Canada).
Passport-sized photographs.
Proof of travel purpose (e.g., invitation letter, itinerary, or documents from the organization you will visit in Canada).
Proof of enough funds to cover your expenses during your stay in Canada.
Ties to your home country (evidence that you will return after your visit, such as employment letter, property ownership, or family ties).
Completed visitor visa application form (IMM 5257E) and family information form (IMM 5645E).
Visa processing fee payment receipt.
Any additional documents required based on your specific situations.
Complete the application form: Fill out the visitor visa application form (IMM 5257E) and the family information form (IMM 5645E). Ensure all information is accurate and up-to-date.

Pay the visa fee: Check the current visa processing fees and make the payment as required. Payment methods may vary depending on the country and visa application center you use.

Submit the application: Submit your completed application form, along with all required documents and the visa fee payment receipt, to the appropriate Canadian visa application center or the Canadian embassy/consulate in your country.

Attend an interview (if required): In some cases, you may be asked to attend an interview at the Canadian embassy or consulate.

Wait for processing: Visa processing times can vary based on your location and the time of year. Check the actual processing times on the official IRCC website.

Receive a decision: Once your application is processed, you will receive a decision regarding your visit visa application. If approved, your visa will be stamped in your passport.

It’s essential to apply for your visit visa well in advance of your intended travel date, as processing times may vary. Additionally, be sure to provide complete and accurate information to increase the chances of a successful visa application.
